Pricing Structure
Pricing Structure
This article details the server configuration and associated pricing structure for our MediaWiki deployment. It is intended for new system administrators and those seeking to understand the infrastructure supporting our wiki. Understanding the server tiers and their corresponding costs is crucial for resource allocation and future scaling efforts. This guide assumes familiarity with basic server concepts like CPU, RAM, and storage. Please refer to Help:Contents for general MediaWiki help.
Server Tiers
We currently operate three distinct server tiers: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Each tier is designed to handle a different level of traffic and complexity. The choice of tier depends on the expected number of users, the size of the wiki content, and the features enabled. Information on Special:Statistics can help you assess the current load.
Bronze Tier
The Bronze tier is our entry-level configuration, suitable for smaller wikis with limited traffic. It's ideal for testing environments or wikis with a small, dedicated user base. This tier prioritizes cost-effectiveness. Consider using Extension:Semantic MediaWiki carefully on this tier, as it can be resource intensive.
Specification | Value |
---|---|
CPU | 2 vCores |
RAM | 4 GB DDR4 |
Storage | 50 GB SSD |
Bandwidth | 1 TB/month |
Monthly Cost | $50 |
Silver Tier
The Silver tier represents a balance between performance and cost. It’s ideal for medium-sized wikis with moderate traffic and a growing user base. This tier can comfortably handle most common extensions like Extension:Cite and Extension:CategoryTree. Monitoring Special:Log/alllogs is recommended on this tier to identify performance bottlenecks.
Specification | Value |
---|---|
CPU | 4 vCores |
RAM | 8 GB DDR4 |
Storage | 100 GB SSD |
Bandwidth | 3 TB/month |
Monthly Cost | $150 |
Gold Tier
The Gold tier is our highest-performance configuration, designed for large, high-traffic wikis with complex features and a large user base. This tier is suitable for wikis utilizing many extensions, such as Extension:VisualEditor and Extension:AbuseFilter. Regular Special:Search queries are handled efficiently on this tier.
Specification | Value |
---|---|
CPU | 8 vCores |
RAM | 16 GB DDR4 |
Storage | 250 GB SSD |
Bandwidth | 10 TB/month |
Monthly Cost | $300 |
Database Configuration
All tiers utilize a dedicated MySQL database server. The database configuration is scaled according to the server tier. The database is critical for wiki performance; see Manual:Database for more information.
Tier | Database vCores | Database RAM | Database Storage |
---|---|---|---|
Bronze | 2 | 4 GB | 50 GB |
Silver | 4 | 8 GB | 100 GB |
Gold | 8 | 16 GB | 250 GB |
Software Stack
All servers use the following software stack:
- Operating System: Ubuntu Server 22.04 LTS
- Web Server: Apache 2.4
- PHP Version: 8.1
- Database: MySQL 8.0
- MediaWiki Version: 1.40
Updates are managed using APT, and regular backups are performed. Refer to MediaWiki official site for information on supported PHP versions.
Considerations for Scaling
If your wiki outgrows its current tier, consider the following:
- **Database Optimization:** Ensure your database is properly indexed and optimized.
- **Caching:** Implement caching mechanisms (e.g., Extension:CacheHitCount) to reduce database load.
- **Extension Management:** Disable or remove unused extensions.
- **Tier Upgrade:** Upgrade to a higher server tier to increase resources.
