Community Support Server Configuration - Technical Documentation

This document details the technical specifications, performance characteristics, recommended use cases, comparisons, and maintenance considerations for the “Community Support” server configuration. This configuration is designed to provide a robust and cost-effective platform for hosting community-driven applications, development environments, and smaller-scale production workloads. It balances performance with affordability, making it ideal for non-critical, but still demanding, services. This document assumes a familiarity with basic server hardware concepts; links to related internal documentation are provided throughout.

1. Hardware Specifications

The “Community Support” configuration is built around a balance of current generation components, focusing on multi-core performance and sufficient memory capacity. The specifications detailed below represent the standard build. Customizations are possible, but may impact warranty and support terms. All components are sourced from approved vendor lists (see Approved Vendor List).

CPU Details: The Intel Xeon Silver 4310 provides a strong foundation for virtualized environments and multi-threaded applications. Its core count and turbo boost frequency deliver good performance for a wide range of workloads. Detailed CPU specifications are available in CPU Performance Analysis.

RAM Configuration: 64GB of DDR4 ECC Registered RAM is standard. ECC (Error Correcting Code) memory is crucial for server stability and data integrity. Registered memory improves reliability and capacity in multi-processor systems. See Memory Technologies for more information on RAM types.

Storage Configuration: The combination of an NVMe SSD for the operating system and a RAID 1 configured pair of HDDs provides a balance of speed and data redundancy. RAID 1 protects against single drive failure. See RAID Configuration Guide for detailed RAID level information.

Networking: The 10 Gigabit Ethernet adapter provides high-bandwidth connectivity for demanding applications. Dual port configuration allows for link aggregation or redundancy.

2. Performance Characteristics

Performance testing was conducted using industry-standard benchmarks and real-world application simulations. All tests were performed in a controlled environment with consistent cooling and power conditions.

Benchmark Results:

  • PassMark CPU Mark: 14,500 (Average)
  • Cinebench R23 (Multi-Core): 9,800 points (Average) - See Benchmarking Methodology
  • IOMeter (SSD Read): 3,450 MB/s (Average)
  • IOMeter (SSD Write): 2,900 MB/s (Average)
  • Nettperf (10GbE): 9.4 Gbps (Throughput)

Real-World Performance:

  • Web Server (Apache/Nginx): Capable of handling 500 concurrent users with average response times under 200ms.
  • Database Server (MySQL/PostgreSQL): Supports moderate database workloads with up to 1000 concurrent connections. - See Database Performance Tuning
  • Virtualization (VMware ESXi/Proxmox VE): Can reliably host 8-12 virtual machines with moderate resource requirements. See Virtualization Best Practices
  • Development Environment (IDE, Compiler): Excellent performance for software development tasks. Compilation times are significantly reduced compared to lower-end configurations.

Performance Monitoring: The server is equipped with IPMI and supports integration with various monitoring solutions (e.g., Nagios, Zabbix) for real-time performance tracking. See Server Monitoring Tools for details.

3. Recommended Use Cases

The “Community Support” configuration is ideally suited for the following applications:

  • **Web Hosting (Small to Medium Scale):** Hosting websites, blogs, and web applications for a moderate number of users.
  • **Development and Testing Environments:** Providing a robust platform for software development, testing, and staging.
  • **Community Forums and Social Media Platforms:** Hosting community-driven platforms with moderate traffic.
  • **Game Servers (Small to Medium Scale):** Hosting dedicated game servers for smaller player bases.
  • **Internal Application Hosting:** Running internal applications and services for small to medium-sized organizations.
  • **Build Servers (CI/CD):** Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment pipelines.
  • **File Sharing and Collaboration:** Hosting file sharing and collaboration platforms (e.g., Nextcloud, ownCloud).
  • **DNS Servers:** Providing reliable DNS services.

This configuration is **not** recommended for extremely high-traffic websites, large-scale databases, or mission-critical applications requiring the highest levels of availability. Consider the "Production Standard" configuration for those scenarios (see Production Standard Server Configuration).

4. Comparison with Similar Configurations

The following table compares the “Community Support” configuration with two other commonly used configurations: “Entry-Level Server” and “Production Standard Server”.

Feature Entry-Level Server Community Support Server Production Standard Server
CPU Intel Xeon E-2300 Series Intel Xeon Silver 4310 Intel Xeon Gold 6338
RAM 32 GB DDR4 ECC 64 GB DDR4 ECC 128 GB DDR4 ECC
Storage (OS) 256 GB SATA SSD 500 GB NVMe SSD 1 TB NVMe SSD
Storage (Data) 1 x 4 TB SATA HDD 2 x 4 TB SATA HDD (RAID 1) 2 x 8 TB SAS HDD (RAID 1)
NIC 1 Gigabit Ethernet 10 Gigabit Ethernet 10 Gigabit Ethernet (Dual Port)
PSU 550W 80+ Bronze 750W 80+ Platinum (Redundant) 1000W 80+ Titanium (Redundant)
Price (Approx.) $1,500 $3,000 $6,000
Typical Use Case Basic web hosting, small databases Community applications, development environments Production workloads, large databases

Entry-Level Server: The Entry-Level Server offers a lower price point but sacrifices performance and redundancy. It is suitable for very basic workloads.

Production Standard Server: The Production Standard Server provides significantly higher performance, redundancy, and scalability, but comes at a much higher cost. It is designed for mission-critical applications and large-scale deployments.

The “Community Support” configuration strikes a balance between these two options, providing a good level of performance and reliability at a reasonable price. A detailed cost-benefit analysis is available in Server Configuration Cost Analysis.

5. Maintenance Considerations

Proper maintenance is crucial for ensuring the long-term reliability and performance of the “Community Support” server.

Cooling: The server chassis is equipped with redundant hot-swappable fans. Regularly monitor fan speeds and temperatures using IPMI or a dedicated monitoring solution. Ensure adequate airflow in the server room to prevent overheating. See Server Room Environmental Control.

Power Requirements: The server requires a dedicated power circuit with sufficient capacity to handle the 750W power supply. The redundant PSU provides protection against single PSU failure. Regularly test the failover functionality of the redundant PSUs. See Power Redundancy Testing.

Storage: Monitor the health of the hard drives using SMART monitoring tools. Regularly back up data to an offsite location to protect against data loss. See Data Backup and Recovery Procedures.

Software Updates: Keep the operating system and all installed software up to date with the latest security patches and bug fixes. See Server Security Best Practices.

Physical Security: Restrict physical access to the server to authorized personnel only. Implement appropriate security measures to prevent unauthorized access and tampering. See Data Center Security.

Regular Inspections: Perform regular visual inspections of the server to check for any signs of damage or wear and tear.

Warranty and Support: All components are covered by a standard manufacturer’s warranty. Extended warranty and support options are available (see Warranty and Support Options). Contact the IT Support team for assistance with any hardware or software issues. See IT Support Contact Information. Remember to consult the Server Troubleshooting Guide before contacting support. ```
