This article details the server configuration supporting the "AI in the Caspian Sea" project, a research initiative focused on environmental monitoring and predictive modeling using artificial intelligence. This document is aimed at new system administrators joining the project and provides a comprehensive overview of the hardware, software, and network infrastructure. Project Overview

The "AI in the Caspian Sea" project utilizes a network of sensors deployed throughout the Caspian Sea to collect data on water quality, marine life, and weather patterns. This data is processed in real-time using machine learning algorithms to identify trends, predict potential environmental hazards, and inform conservation efforts. The core of this operation rests on a robust and scalable server infrastructure. Refer to the Project Documentation for details about the scientific goals. Data ingestion is handled by the Data Ingestion Pipeline and model training is performed with Machine Learning Frameworks.

Hardware Infrastructure

The server infrastructure is housed in a dedicated data center located in Aktau, Kazakhstan. It consists of a cluster of high-performance servers interconnected by a low-latency network. Detailed specifications are provided below. Power redundancy is managed by the Power Management System.

Software Stack

The servers run a customized version of Ubuntu Server 22.04 LTS. The core software components include:

  • Operating System: Ubuntu Server 22.04 LTS
  • Database: PostgreSQL 14 with the PostGIS extension for geospatial data.
  • Web Server: Nginx. Configuration files are located in Nginx Configuration Directory.
  • Programming Languages: Python 3.10, R 4.2.0
  • Machine Learning Frameworks: TensorFlow 2.10, PyTorch 1.12.
  • Containerization: Docker and Kubernetes are used for deploying and managing microservices. See the Kubernetes Deployment Guide.
  • Monitoring: Prometheus and Grafana for system monitoring and alerting.

Firewall rules are managed using UFW (Uncomplicated Firewall). Access to the servers is restricted to authorized personnel via SSH. Refer to the Network Security Policy for detailed information. DNS resolution is provided by an internal DNS Server.

Data Backup and Disaster Recovery

Regular data backups are performed to ensure data integrity and availability. Backups are stored both on-site and off-site. The disaster recovery plan is documented in the Disaster Recovery Plan. Backup schedules are detailed in the Backup Schedule.
