AI in the Abkhazia Rainforest: Server Configuration

Welcome to the server configuration documentation for the "AI in the Abkhazia Rainforest" project. This article details the hardware and software setup required to support the real-time data processing and machine learning algorithms used in our ecological monitoring initiative. This document is geared towards newcomers to the wiki and our server infrastructure. Please read carefully before attempting any modifications.

Project Overview

The "AI in the Abkhazia Rainforest" project utilizes a network of sensor nodes collecting data on biodiversity, climate conditions, and deforestation patterns within the Abkhazia rainforest. This data is transmitted wirelessly to a central server cluster for processing and analysis. Artificial intelligence, specifically deep learning models, are employed to identify species, predict environmental changes, and detect illegal logging activities. The system requires robust, scalable, and reliable server infrastructure. We use Semantic MediaWiki extensively for data management.

Hardware Configuration

The server cluster consists of three primary nodes: a master node for coordinating tasks, a processing node for handling data analysis, and a storage node for archiving data. Each node is built with the specifications detailed below. Remember to consult the Server Room Access Policy before physically accessing any hardware.

Component Master Node Processing Node Storage Node
CPU Intel Xeon Gold 6248R (24 cores) Intel Xeon Gold 6338 (32 cores) Intel Xeon Silver 4310 (12 cores)
RAM 128 GB DDR4 ECC 256 GB DDR4 ECC 64 GB DDR4 ECC
Storage (OS) 500 GB NVMe SSD 500 GB NVMe SSD 250 GB NVMe SSD
Storage (Data) N/A 2 x 4TB NVMe SSD (RAID 0) 16 x 8TB SATA HDD (RAID 6)
Network Interface 10 GbE 10 GbE 10 GbE
Power Supply 1200W Redundant 1600W Redundant 850W Redundant

The network infrastructure relies on a dedicated VLAN for security and performance. See the Network Diagram for a visual representation.

Software Stack

Our software stack is based on Linux, specifically Ubuntu Server 22.04 LTS. The following software components are installed on each node:

  • Operating System: Ubuntu Server 22.04 LTS
  • Containerization: Docker and Kubernetes are used for deploying and managing applications.
  • Programming Languages: Python 3.10 is the primary language for AI model development and data processing.
  • Machine Learning Frameworks: TensorFlow and PyTorch are utilized for training and deploying deep learning models.
  • Database: PostgreSQL with the PostGIS extension is used for storing and querying geospatial data.
  • Message Queue: RabbitMQ is used for asynchronous task processing.
  • Monitoring: Prometheus and Grafana are employed for system monitoring and alerting.
  • Web Server: Nginx serves as a reverse proxy and load balancer.

Network Configuration

Each server node is assigned a static IP address within the dedicated VLAN. The master node acts as the Kubernetes control plane. The processing and storage nodes are configured as worker nodes. Firewall rules are implemented using UFW to restrict access to only necessary ports. Please refer to the Firewall Policy for details.

Node IP Address Role Services
Master 192.168.10.10 Kubernetes Control Plane Kubernetes API Server, etcd, kube-scheduler, kube-controller-manager
Processing 192.168.10.11 Data Analysis TensorFlow, PyTorch, Python scripts, RabbitMQ consumer
Storage 192.168.10.12 Data Archiving PostgreSQL, RAID management, Backup scripts

Data Flow

Sensor data is transmitted via LoRaWAN to a gateway. From the gateway, the data is forwarded to the master node, which distributes the tasks to the processing node. The processing node analyzes the data and stores the results in the PostgreSQL database on the storage node. Data visualization is handled by a separate web application, utilizing the APIs exposed by the processing node. Consult the Data Pipeline Diagram for a detailed illustration.

Security Considerations

Security is paramount. All data transmission is encrypted using TLS/SSL. Access to the server cluster is restricted to authorized personnel only, using SSH key authentication. Regular security audits are conducted to identify and address potential vulnerabilities. See the Security Policy for complete details and the Incident Response Plan in case of a breach.

Security Measure Description Implementation
Data Encryption Protecting data in transit and at rest TLS/SSL for network communication, disk encryption
Access Control Limiting access to authorized personnel SSH key authentication, firewall rules, user permissions
Intrusion Detection Identifying malicious activity Prometheus alerts, log monitoring
Regular Backups Ensuring data recovery in case of failure Automated backups to offsite storage

Future Enhancements

We plan to incorporate GPU acceleration to further improve the performance of the AI models. We are also exploring the use of a distributed file system, such as Ceph, to enhance storage scalability and resilience.
