  1. Data Center

This article provides a comprehensive overview of the data center infrastructure supporting our MediaWiki installation. It's geared towards newcomers who want to understand the physical environment that powers our wiki. Understanding the data center is crucial for anyone involved in System administration, Database maintenance, or general troubleshooting of the wiki platform.

Overview

Our data center is a Tier 3 facility, meaning it boasts multiple redundant systems and components to ensure high availability and minimal downtime. It's located in a geographically stable region with robust network connectivity. The entire facility is climate-controlled, with redundant power supplies, cooling systems, and fire suppression. We prioritize security, with multiple layers of physical and logical access controls. Proper disaster recovery planning is integral to the data center’s design.

Power Infrastructure

Maintaining a stable power supply is paramount. Our data center utilizes a redundant power architecture, featuring multiple utility feeds, Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), and backup generators. This ensures continuous operation even during power outages.

Component Specification Redundancy
Utility Power Dual 120/240V feeds N+1
UPS Systems 500 kVA 2N
Backup Generators 1 MW Diesel N+1

The UPS systems provide immediate power backup during short-term outages, while the generators kick in for extended interruptions. Regular maintenance and testing of all power components are performed to guarantee reliability. This is monitored by our network monitoring system.

Network Infrastructure

High-speed, reliable network connectivity is essential for delivering wiki content to users worldwide. Our data center is connected to multiple Tier 1 internet providers, offering diverse routing paths and minimizing latency. We employ a layered network architecture with firewalls, routers, and switches to ensure security and performance. Load balancing distributes traffic across multiple servers.

Component Specification Bandwidth
Internet Providers Multiple Tier 1 providers (e.g., Level 3, Verizon) 10 Gbps per provider
Core Routers Cisco ASR 9000 Series 100 Gbps throughput
Distribution Switches Cisco Catalyst 9500 Series 10 Gbps per port

The network is constantly monitored for performance and security threats using intrusion detection and prevention systems. We utilize BGP for optimal routing.

Server Hardware

The core of our MediaWiki installation resides on a cluster of dedicated servers. These servers are built with high-quality components and are configured for optimal performance and reliability. We primarily use blade servers to maximize density and efficiency. This also simplifies cable management.

Component Specification
Server Type Supermicro Blade Servers
CPU Intel Xeon Gold 6248R (24 cores)
Memory 256 GB DDR4 ECC REG
Storage 2 x 1 TB NVMe SSD (RAID 1)
Network Interface Dual 10 Gbps Ethernet

We regularly review and upgrade our server hardware to ensure the wiki can handle increasing traffic and data volumes. Virtualization is used where appropriate to improve resource utilization. Server maintenance is scheduled to minimize downtime, and follows our documented change management process. The servers run a hardened version of Linux, specifically CentOS.

Cooling and Environmental Control

Maintaining a stable temperature and humidity level is vital for preventing hardware failures. Our data center utilizes a precision cooling system with redundant chillers and air handlers. The temperature is maintained within a narrow range of 20-24°C (68-75°F) with humidity between 40-60%.

Security Measures

Physical security is a top priority. Access to the data center is restricted to authorized personnel only, and is controlled via biometric scanners, security guards, and surveillance cameras. Logical security measures include firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and regular security audits. We follow security best practices and comply with relevant industry standards.

Future Expansion

We are continuously planning for future growth and scalability. Our data center has ample space and power capacity to accommodate additional servers and networking equipment as needed. We are also exploring the use of cloud computing to augment our existing infrastructure.
