  1. Contact Support – Server Configuration Details

This article details the configuration of the “Contact Support” server, a critical component of our internal infrastructure responsible for handling support requests. This guide is intended for new system administrators and engineers who need to understand the server’s setup and maintenance procedures. Understanding these details is vital for troubleshooting, scaling, and ensuring the continuous availability of our support systems. See also Server Room Access for physical access information.

Overview

The "Contact Support" server hosts the internal support ticketing system, a custom-built application utilizing a LAMP stack. It manages all incoming support requests from internal employees and external clients. Its stability and performance are paramount to maintaining a positive user experience and efficient issue resolution. It interacts heavily with the Database Servers and the Email Servers. A failure on this server directly impacts Incident Response procedures.

Hardware Specifications

The server hardware is a dedicated physical machine located in the primary data center. The following table outlines the key specifications:

Component Specification
CPU Intel Xeon Gold 6248R (24 cores)
RAM 128 GB DDR4 ECC Registered
Storage 2 x 1 TB NVMe SSD (RAID 1) – Operating System & Application 4 x 4 TB SATA HDD (RAID 10) – Ticket Data & Logs
Network Interface 2 x 10 Gigabit Ethernet
Power Supply 2 x 800W Redundant Power Supplies

These specifications were chosen to provide ample resources for the application and anticipated growth. Regular monitoring of Server Resource Utilization is crucial.

Software Configuration

The server runs a minimal installation of Ubuntu Server 22.04 LTS. The following table details the core software components and their versions:

Software Version
Operating System Ubuntu Server 22.04 LTS
Web Server Apache 2.4.57
Database Server MariaDB 10.11
PHP 8.1.22
Application Server Custom Support Ticketing System (v3.5)
Firewall UFW (Uncomplicated Firewall)

The software stack is configured for optimal performance and security. Regular updates and patching are performed according to the Security Patching Schedule. Configuration files are managed via Version Control System.

Networking Configuration

The server is configured with a static IP address and DNS records. The following table outlines the networking details:

Parameter Value
Hostname support.internal.example.com
IP Address 192.168.1.100
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.1.1
DNS Servers 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4

The server is behind a firewall and only allows inbound connections on ports 80 (HTTP) and 443 (HTTPS). All traffic is logged for auditing purposes. See Network Topology Diagram for a visual representation of the network. Access to the server is restricted to authorized personnel only, as detailed in the Access Control List. Regular Firewall Rule Reviews are conducted.

Security Considerations

Security is a top priority. The following security measures are in place:

  • Regular security audits and vulnerability scans.
  • Intrusion detection and prevention system (IDS/IPS).
  • Strong password policies and multi-factor authentication.
  • Regular backups to an offsite location. See Backup and Recovery Procedures.
  • Application-level security measures, such as input validation and output encoding.
  • Strict adherence to the Security Policy.

Monitoring and Alerting

The server is continuously monitored using Nagios and Prometheus. Alerts are configured for critical metrics such as CPU usage, memory usage, disk space, and network traffic. Automated alerts are sent to the on-call team in case of any issues. Detailed logs are collected and analyzed using ELK Stack.
